A hodge podge o’ thoughts

I know yesterday’s post wasn’t exactly a ray of sunshine.  I did warn you, though.

——————————–

Is it just me or does this drive anyone else crazy:  those @#!$#@$  tip jars that every place of business seems to have now???  This is something I truly do not get.  When did this become acceptable?  Those things are EVERYwhere.  Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, Subway, the smoothie shop I go to (who have the absolute BEST smoothies ever…even better than Jamba Juice…but you still shouldn’t have a TIP JAR on your counter).  I was at Dunkin Donuts last night after church, and I wanted to ask them, “Why do I have to tip you for reaching over and grabbing two donuts and then taking my money?  WHY IS THAT TIP-WORTHY??!!  That’s your job.  You didn’t come to a table and wait on me and make trip after trip to keep my drink filled or to get my food or to get me some to-go containers for my leftovers.  You are standing at a counter…the donuts are two feet away from you…you don’t even really have to move your feet to reach the donuts.  This is not tip-worthy!”  Grrrrrrrrrr.    True waiters and waitresses are the people who you tip.  They are the ones running all over the restaurant catering to your needs.  They don’t even get paid minimum wage—they make their living on tips that are well earned (usually).  Did I miss the boat?  Is this proper etiquette/protocol now?  I just don’t get it.  I shouldn’t be so negative, but I just do not get it.

—————————–

And finally, something very positive =]  Seriously.  I love my church.  I love my small group (the parenting class), and the wonderful fellowship we share…even though I’m only one of three single moms in the class of about twenty couples, it doesn’t matter.  We are all trying to raise moral children.  I leave there on Wednesday nights feeling so happy.  And I love the ministry that I volunteer in…the Meals Ministry.  I have to make and deliver a meal tomorrow evening, and I’m so excited =]  Not sure what I’m going to make, but I know the dessert will be this lemon yogurt cake I found the recipe for on the “Barefoot Contessa” website.  Jordan loves helping me cook/bake whenever it’s my turn to deliver a meal, and it’s such a great example for him of how we should and are expected to put others before self.

This is what Grace Family has planned for single moms for Mother’s Day.  What a wonderful, wonderful thing.  I signed up for a haircut/color and a pedi.  I haven’t let ANYone cut my hair except for my hair goddess, Lisy, in the past fifteen years.  But I’ve also never had my hair professionally colored—I always do it myself because it’s cheaper.  So I’m going to be brave and take a chance with someone else cutting my hair because I want a professional coloring for once in my life.  Pray that I don’t come out butchered!  It’s SOOO easy to mess up curly hair.  No amount of good hair coloring will make up for a curly mullet!

  1. OhMyLord! The curly mullet just made me choke half to death on my *galldarn* Easter candy!!!
I’m so impressed with your church, Rhonda. What a wonderful thing they are doing for Mother’s Day. Awesome!!!!! I hope you have a super-dee-duper relaxing time.

  2. I’m with you on the tip jars. Irritating things. And I make a point to ignore them unless something special has been done for me.
What your church is doing is so great. I know you will be pleased with the results. And if by chance you do end up with a curly mullet ( the mental picture that I conjure up in my mind just makes me giggle) it will grow out. Now wasn’t that encouraging? Seriously, sit back and enjoy it. Love you

  3. I just LOVE your curly hair, and I’m sure you won’t have a mullet..LOL! giggles from here too.
Kudos from here on your church. Awesome!
The only tip jar I have ever put a tip in. The subway in Worthington. Vicky knows the girl there. She goes out of her way to make everyone’s sandwich yummy and just right. Jackson’s “2 turkey’s only”. and writes everyone’s name on the wrapper. With us there are a ton to make too. She never makes a mistake. The rest of them I’ve ignored.

  4. there’s an ice cream drive thru in Belleview that only has 2 girls working. They do the sandwiches and the whole nine yards. They actually do something besides take my money.I pick and choose who I tip. I would not tip dunkin donut , or anyone who is only taking money. What next? Supermarket cashiers ? or maybe a bank teller!!guess it’s worth a try.
